While Joe discussed finding Nim with the Surface Rescue Team, Shohn took a voice call from Rooshkah, who briefed her on day-to-day details.

"Roo," she said, "you're delaying telling me something. Out with it."

"The background search for Joe's birth mother turned up nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing. Anywhere. It occurred to me there might be others her age who might also be missing and dug a little deeper. But first, are you alone?"

"Hold on." Shohn motioned to Joe that she was taking her call outside, and he nodded. In the hall, she activated an extra layer of the privacy shield. "Okay. I'm alone. What did you find?"

"My oldest brother attends Tarth Tech for criminal science, and a few months ago, he told me about this detective. She'd spent years searching for her missing brother and uncovered the biggest scandal in the history of the Thieves' Guild. Children were being kidnapped and sold to high-powered thieves as apprentices. Deshai, she called them."

"Did it mention the detective's name?"

"No, my roomie said they used fake names to protect everyone. I read up on the case last night because I thought whatever steps they took back then might help me find this woman. But there were no details and apparently the detective had an unnamed source. Gotta say, it sure sounded like idBot was helping her."

"Why?"

"Well, we'd started protecting the Guild right before that, and all their files would have been added to our databases. It's probably not true anyway. An insane story."

"You're right. It was insane. And it was kept quiet because it was Saint-Cyr's Deshai and I'm the insider at idBot who helped her."

He let out a string of colorful curse words. "I had no idea."

"You're saying they teach this in college?"

"Yeah, roomie said it's a classic case. But the details..." Her assistant was on voice only, but she could almost see Roo shrug. "Listen, the thing is, that got me to searching for info in a different direction. That's when I found what I'm actually calling about."

Down the hall from Shohn, a door opened, and a man crossed to another door.

She waited until he'd gone inside. "All right. I'm listening."

"I thought, what if other families were doing the same kinds of searches I'm doing now, except it was back then? What if other people found their person? That might hold the answer."

"You started with people conducting similar searches close to thirty years ago. That's a smart step. I'll give you that. What did you find?"

"You ever heard of the Sabbath Experiment?"

The hair on the back of her neck stood up. Everyone knew the lie about it. The truth had been part of her training as a Chosen, not that she could mention any of that to Rooshkah. "I know what everybody knows. Genetics experiment gone bad. Ran a little over five years. Ended in arson and destruction of viable embryos. Some called it murder, others a mercy. Countless purged records."

All tied to the immortal king himself who'd been a scientist in that life.
